How often you should replace your sunglasses

How often you should replace your sunglasses

Sunglasses are essential to protecting your eyes from sunlight, but this isn't as widely known as it should be. In the UK, we may think about sun cream and not sunglasses but they are just as important for your health and well-being. We probably wouldn't use an out of date sun cream, so why should our sunglasses be any different, right?

Depending on how often you wear your sunglasses, for how long you wear them, and how well you look after them, you may need to change your sunglasses lenses at least every 2 years, because over time the protection they provide your eyes reduces.

Backed by research

A study conducted in 2016 by Brazilian researchers shows that sunlight degrades the lenses of sunglasses, providing increasingly less effective protection over time. The study goes on to detail that if you wear your sunglasses for an average of 2 hours per day, you should replace the lenses every 2 years. The findings were published in the journal BioMedical Engineering OnLine.
