If you are visiting the Isle of Wight and wondering where you can get Super Unleaded, you're in the right place. There are no Shell petrol stations on the Isle of Wight, however, plenty of other Super Unleaded options are available if you know where to find them.
Petrol types explained
With the introduction of E10 petrol in the UK in 2021 as a way to help reduce carbon emissions, understanding the different types is more complicated than ever, but it doesn't need to be. Let me explain...
E10 (95% octane)
Standard grade (95 octane) petrol became E10 in Great Britain in September 2021 and in Northern Ireland in November 2022.
E10 petrol contains up to 10% renewable ethanol, which will help to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with petrol vehicles and tackle climate change. Petrol in the UK currently contains up to 5% renewable ethanol (known as E5).
Some older vehicles can't use E10 fuel, however, this will probably not apply to you. See the full list of vehicles here.
E5 / Premium Unleaded (95% octane)
The standard unleaded petrol available across Europe, suitable for almost all petrol engines.
Super Unleaded (97/98% octane)
The highest-octane fuel widely available is required for some high-performance Japanese cars and preferable for others (like Porsches).
Shell V-Power Unleaded (99% octane)
Some retailers, such as Shell, sell their own high-performance, high-octane fuels which boast up to 99% octane for ultra high-performance.
Should I choose high octane?
If you aren't a petrol head and haven't asked yourself this questions before now, the answer is probably no, continue purchasing fuel as you would normally.
For most vehicles, higher octane fuel may improve performance and fuel mileage and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by a few percent when towing a trailer or carrying heavy loads, especially in hot weather. However, under normal driving conditions, you may get little to no benefit. High octane fuel can help with acceleration in some cases, but it depends on the car and the driving conditions.
