Summer Solstice on the Isle of Wight: kick off to the sunniest season

Isle Of Wight Summer Beach

Hey there, sun-seekers!

As the longest day of the year arrives, we're excited to welcome summer on the Isle of Wight, the UK's sunniest place! Today marks the summer solstice, a time to soak up the rays and make the most of our island's glorious weather.

What is the Summer Solstice?

The summer solstice occurs when the Earth's axis is tilted at its maximum angle of 23.5 degrees towards the sun, resulting in the longest day of the year. This phenomenon usually falls on June 20th or 21st in the Northern Hemisphere. On the Isle of Wight, we're treated to an extra hour of sunshine, making it the perfect opportunity to get outside and enjoy our stunning coastline and countryside.

Why is the Isle of Wight so sunny?

Located off the coast of southern England, the Isle of Wight benefits from a unique microclimate that makes it one of the sunniest places in the UK. The island's proximity to the Gulf Stream and its position in the path of a high-pressure system create a warm and dry climate, perfect for soaking up those rays. With an average of over 1,900 hours of sunshine per year, it's no wonder we're spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor activities!
